The Hugawugs Bedtime Reading Guide

In The Hugawugs Bedtime, the eight Hugawugs characters show the steps they take to get ready for bed and sleepily say goodnight. These read-aloud ideas and tips can be particularly helpful if you’ve read the story over and over and need some fresh ways to approach story time.

Intro Page - After a long day of fun, the Hugawugs come inside to get ready for bed.

“Look at the pink Hugawug. Do you know her name?”
            “What is Squidget carrying?”
“Which Hugawug is carrying a ball?
“What is your favorite toy for playing outside?

Page 1 - First, everyone works together to put away their books and toys.

            “What color is this block?”
“What is the shape of this block?”
“How many books does Jasper need to put away? Let’s count the books.”
“The Hugawugs have alphabet cards. Let’s say each letter together.”

Page 2 - Bathtime! Squidget and Gus splash in the tub with boats and bubbles.

“Is this a big bubble or a small bubble?”
“Let’s count five bubbles. One, two…”
“The Hugawugs take their bath before bed. When do you take your bath?”

Page 3 - Bailey and Jasper love brushing their teeth with strawberry toothpaste.

“What flavor of toothpaste do you have?”
“Why is it important to brush our teeth?”
“Show me how you brush your teeth.”

Page 4 - It’s time for Daisy and Ruby to put on their soft polka-dot pajamas.

            “What color is the chair?”
“Can you point to something that is pink?”
“The mice are putting on blue pajamas and red pajamas.”
“What is the color of the pajamas you are wearing tonight?”

Page 5 - In his favorite chair, Max snuggles with his blanket and fuzzy bunny.

“What color is Max’s fuzzy bunny?”
“Do you have a fuzzy friend that you like to snuggle? What is its name?”
“What do you like to sleep with at night?”

Page 6 - Gus reads by the night-light and watches his friends dance in its glow.

“Do you have a night-light? Let’s turn it on.”
“What colors are the books? Let’s say each color together.”
“Gus likes to read. What is your favorite book?”

Page 7 - Bailey and Daisy look up at the bright moon and twinkling stars.

            “Let’s count the stars together.”
“Look at the clock. It is the Hugawugs bedtime.”
“Let’s look out the window at the moon together.”
“What would you wish for if you could make a wish upon a star?”

Page 8 - After going potty one last time, Dover washes his hands with soap.

“Look, the kitty is washing her paws too. See how she uses her tongue?”
            “What color are Dover’s pajamas?”
“Why is it important to wash our hands after going potty?”

Page 9 - The sleepy friends share goodnight hugs before climbing into bed.

“Look at the numbers on the growth chart. Let’s count them.”
“Can you give me a goodnight hug?”
“Who else do you like to give hugs to?”

Page 10 - Then, everyone cuddles together and listens to a quiet bedtime story.

“Some of the Hugawugs have already fallen asleep. Who is sleeping?”
“Max and Daisy have their favorite stuffed animals. What is your favorite
             stuffed animal?”
            “Let’s count the Hugawugs.”

Closing Page - The Hugawugs are falling asleep. Good night Hugawugs. Good night.

Read this page in a quiet whisper so as to not wake up the sleeping Hugawugs.

            “Can you find the owls?”
“Where are the two mice sleeping?”
“How many Hugawugs are sleeping in this bed? Let’s count them.”
“What noise do the Hugawugs make when they sleep?”
